Wooden Chests: How To Perform Small Repairs To The Velvet Lining

Jewelry chests that are frequently opened and closed can break a hinge, or get dented, or scratched, or the velvet lining might get frayed. Minor mishaps can happen that can damage your favorite jewelry box and mar it's beauty and in some cases, you may not be able to use it too.

Learn how to repair the velvet lining in your jewelry box and salvage your jewelry box on your own. Velvet is composed of many different fibers and adding lycra to it makes it stretchable and easier to handle. The most expensive is velvet made purely out of silk. Viscose, acetate, polyester, etc are some of the synthetic fibers used to make velvet.

There are 2 types of Velvet lining:

1. Velvet with a backer (with or without adhesive) and
2. Velvet without a backer (with or without adhesive).

Velvet without a backer is more difficult to handle in all aspects. Cutting, stretching, and adding adhesive can be really tough. And it is widely used while installing the bottom or drawer as it allows the artisan to apply the velvet, cut it , and then insert the bottom and glue it into place with the velvet already installed for a perfect finish around the edges.

However, if you are trying to replace a torn or frayed velvet lining, or just trying to make a jewelry box out of an ordinary wooden box, you will find the velvet with a backer easier to cut, stretch, and add glue (if are using the velvet with the adhesiveless backer). Trying to get a perfect fit is nearly impossible if the drawer or bottom of the box is already installed. But, the backer helps prevent bubbles in the velvet during installation and shrinkage, from over-stretching, during the installation process.

It is basically a matter of preference whether you wish to use a non-adhesive backed velvet or an adhesive backed velvet and also dependent on the glue you use. The drawback in applying glue to non-adhesive backed velvet is that sometimes it can result in glue clumps because of uneven application. The only benefit here is that you get to use the glue of your choice which you feel is right for the application.

If you are repairing the lining or if you are planning to install velvet in an old box, it would be best to use the velvet with adhesive backer on it. Especially if you are untrained and know nothing of installing velvet and if you are not equipped with the right tools. This is the easiest type of velvet to handle and if you are careful and patient, you just might be able to fix it perfectly!

Nothing can be more satisfying than having fixed something with your own hands. Especially if it's fixing something like your daughter or wife's favorite jewelry box .
