Toxins In The Home Can Cause Disease

We all know that cleaning is important to protect our loved ones health in our homes, workplaces and schools. Unfortunately, the cleaning products we use like window cleaners, soaps, polishes or grooming supplies mostly have harmful toxins that can compromise our well-being. In fact, even products in the market that say they are "green" may contain certain toxins that are unsafe when used on a routine basis.

Let us now talk about how these cleaning products affect our loved ones health in our homes, and what we can do to protect our loved ones health. Have you felt burning in your eyes or throat or maybe a headache after using an aerosol spray, window cleaner, air freshener, chlorine beach, detergent, dishwashing liquid, oven cleaners, floor polish or upholstery cleaners? These products actually contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxins that are released once they are sprayed. They are proven to contribute not only to headaches but chronic respiratory problems and allergic reaction as well. According to the Cancer Research Society, 23.6% of the population will have a strong reaction even to small amounts of these toxic substances.

Next, a lot of people are not aware that bleach-containing products must never be mixed with a cleaner that contains ammonia. When these two chemicals are combined they create a gas that can lead to chronic breathing problems and possibly death.

Even cleaning supplies that have natural fragrances like air fresheners have harmful effects as they react with high levels of ozone that are from indoor resources, or from outdoor air, and consequently form formaldehyde and other dangerous fine particles that can worsen asthma and lung diseases. All of which are life-threatening, especially formaldehyde which is a known human carcinogen.

We must make it a habit to always read labels on cleaning household supplies before deciding which ones to purchase. Choose a product that does not have VOCs, fragrances, flammable ingredients or irritants in them and avoid using air fresheners. Also, products that are labeled "natural" do not mean they are healthier to use.
