Houseboating Tips for Beginners in Murray River

Houseboating is absolutely an exciting escapade for the whole family on a weekend or holiday vacation. There are a lot of thrilling activities you could do. So, if you're considering a houseboat escapade, the following tips and guidelines can help you, especially when you are a first-timer:

* Most if not all houseboat rental companies conduct briefing sessions with every group heading out for a houseboat trip. You will need to know how to operate the houseboat's many systems.

* Do not rush. Houseboats normally chug along at speeds between 8 & 16 kilometers per hour. Pushing the vessel's engine to accelerate beyond that pace will burn a lot of fuel. However, this would not make the boat run faster.

*Tie the vessel up tightly. To prevent the houseboat from being drifted off overnight, make sure you always secure the boat before you retire to bed. This doesn't mean that you must hurry back to a beach, the houseboat could be anchored to stakes firmly nailed into the ground or to strong trees. Be sure that the lines are tight and secured and you've left enough space between other houseboats.

* Ensure that you have a manual of the vessel. Briefings are great but you will definitely have further questions and concerns and forget some essential pointers. So, be sure that you get a copy of the vessel's manual, especially if it is not mentioned during the orientation.

* When docking the houseboat, you have to have some momentum in order to overcome any current or wind. But momentum isn't equal to speed. You want just enough speed to get into the dock and be able to shift smoothly into reverse to stop the vessel.

* If possible, you want to dock the vessel into current or wind. It's easier to handle a houseboat into current and wind, and it also helps slow you down as you dock.

* Always remember that the Murray River is always changing. Even if you've tightly anchored the vessel, the water falls and rises, which can unmoor the vessel. You must check the vessel and the water often. Also, the idea that you should sink the anchors two to three feet into the sand is great if there is sand. But if the water is too high, it might not be possible to anchor into the sand. If it is solid rock, you will have to be creative.
