Travel Tips With Children
Travelling with kids can present several challenges. You must be prepared. Carrying many things for the children keep them busy while on the trip could save you many stressful hours.
Newborn to 2
Children who falls within this age group frequently will sleep on long drives so their sleeping patterns will unavoidably be messed up. Plan ahead for several breaks and rest stops to tend to your little kids, change diapers or give them time to run off some of their excess energy. Make sure to pack a favourite stuff.
Children Three to Five
Keeping children in this age group occupied requires more ingenuity. Help your child to pack a child-sized bag or box of activities. Make it something unique and fun with minimal pieces for them to lose. It is also a great idea to add some snacks like fruit snacks or cupcakes for them to nibble on. Toys, books a few crayons and colour book all work perfectly for this age bracket. Remember to bring their favourite blanket and stuffed animal.
Children Six to Nine Years Old
Travelling with kids in this age bracket is most of the time more fun and less stressful. Games can be invented like "how many white cars do you see pass by." Count out of the number plates of cars or SUV's or anything fun and exciting. If the child knows how to read, pack one or two of his favourite books. Crayons and a colour book might also interest this age bracket. A lightweight blanket and perhaps a stuffed animal as well could help them to feel comfy.
Children 10 to 12 Years Old
Tween can be hard to please. These kids can be very fickle minded and choosy. So be patient. Pack their headphones and some music. Consider a DVD and a player with headphones and have them watch a movie or something. Books are also excellent for this age.
Children 13 to 15 Years Old
Teens never want to be seen with parents. That makes it all the more interesting. The truth is, they truly love you and enjoy being your child, they just like to look "cool" to the other teens. Pack some dvd's, music and lots of extra headphones. You can also encourage them to talk about the trip and the sights they will see as well.
Children Sixteen to Eighteen Years Old
During this stage, the effects of early teenage stage has been eradicated. If possible, allow them to drive or navigate occasionally. Involve them in planning the trip or route. Give them as much choices as you possibly can and they'll feel more grown ups and would be willing to be seen with you. Of course, if all else fails, dvd's, music and headphones are a good fall back for this age bracket as well.
Travelling with children can be an adventure if one looks at it like so. Remember that children are only young once and one day you will reminisce with fun memories about trips, even if this is the worst one you have ever been on.
