7 Holiday Hints

Traveling has become very popular in recent history. We are traveling more than our parents even did and a lot more than our grandparents did. We often don't give a second thought to the vast distances we travel. The only concern we have is the possibility of jet lag. With all the places we can go now, the world feels like it keeps getting smaller.

And guess what? That's great. We now have a great opportunity to experience other cultures. We can see how other people live their lives, work and interact with each other. However, there are some things you should know about before you travel.

1. Remarkably, the majority of travelers don't look up even the most basic information about the country they'll be visiting. This is a truly important factor when planning any vacation in order to escape any unexpected disappointments.

2. Checking on the standard weather for the destination is a pretty basic thing to do. That's so you can understand what clothes you need to pack for your stay. It kind of goes without saying - but I'm going to say it anyway - check the average temperatures and weather conditions for the time of year you're going to be there. As an example, it's actually winter in Australia from June to August, and in most of the Southern Hemisphere as well.

3. Be sure your travel insurance covers you properly for your destination and for the length of your stay. You DID purchase travel insurance, didn't you?

4. It's true - the whole world runs on paperwork. Make certain that you've got all the documentation needed for your travels. Passports, visas, immunization records and anything else that may be required. If you don't have all your ducks in a row, you could be turned away at the airport or at the point of entry. Be absolutely certain of what's needed and make sure you get it.

5. Check to see if you need to be immunized against any diseases that may be prevalent at your destination. Be sure to protect your health.

6. If driving will be part of your vacation, make sure that your license is acceptable in that country. You may find that an international drivers license is required. It's also a good idea to be familiar with the local driving laws.

7. And here's the most crucial thing - is your passport current? If you've answered "no", do you have enough time to either get one or have an expired one renewed? Note: there are some countries that won't let you in if your passport has less than a month to run. Check now and be sure!
